How did you get into your profession?

My favorite subject in high school was English, but I was torn after really enjoying an accounting course I took. My favorite teacher encouraged me to focus on accounting and I never looked back.

What has been instrumental to your success?

Working hard, always trying to improve and grow my skillset, and genuinely caring about my clients and my coworkers. People want to work with people they like and trust.

What career advice would you give to someone just starting in your industry?

Try everything and be open to all opportunities. It will allow you to become a well-rounded advisor and help you find what area of the profession you like the most.

What workplace event or project are you looking forward to?

At the time of writing this, I am looking forward to our end of tax season party. Tax season is stressful and we like to reward ourselves and celebrate!

What is an issue currently facing your industry that an outside observer might not be aware of?

There is a steady decline in accountants and CPAs. Fewer people are graduating with accounting degrees and the number of accountants who take the CPA exam is dropping.

What is your favorite business book and what lessons have you gleaned from it?

Leaders Eat Last by Simon Sinek. The main takeaways I gleaned were leaders put people first, integrity matters and you don’t need formal ranking or titles to be a leader.

How do you motivate your team?

By being transparent, providing autonomy, feedback, challenging work and encouraging teamwork.

What is the best moment of your career?

Becoming managing director of our firm and at the age that I did.

If you were going to teach a college course, what would you teach?

Conflict resolution. I wish I had taken a course like that in college because conflict in the workplace is inevitable and it’s a valuable skillset.
